Charlie Sheen Intervention.
We’re no better than Charlie Sheen. We watch him basking in his mega wealth with users publically snacking on his goods and act like it’s nothing we know, not true. Charlie’s severe sense of entitlement is endemic of this society. Don’t tell me you haven’t seen extreme self-love and ignorance with the people around you. Just because he and his tightrope are higher off the ground, doesn’t mean his trip isn’t the same.
Charlie Sheen is a direct reflection to everyone in this society struggling with the addiction of grandeur, never owning up to responsibility. While his camp bails and he stands alone choosing only the company of people who’ve made careers screwing others on the public stage, we feel a sense of relief and distance from the disaster. Don’t give yourself that out. Use this as a reminder, no one is free from consequence – nothing can buy away the truth. Not even Hollywood can Technicolor Charlie’s fall.
This is not about him alone, this is about the false sense of human value this society celebrates. We honor people for what they have, what they look like and then sit and watch while they drown in the shallow end thankful it’s not us. This is not okay, it’s personal. That ability to excuse Charlie because he seems to be an addict, is the same skill set we use to write off our own responsibility. We need to hold each other and ourselves accountable. Do your part. The world owes you nothing until you work to prove you deserve something.
This society needs an intervention.
No more excuses. Consider what you can do for yourself that you expect others to do and do it. Consider where you can take more responsibility and take it. And look for where you help to handicap others by stifling their independence and let go already. Charlie Sheen is on the public stage for a reason. Let’s not waste this lesson pretending we actually live ON Jersey Shore.
Sheen said ‘Hope is for suckers.’ I disagree. Hope is for all of us that believe we can turn this thing around together. Let’s cook this addiction of entitlement and get back to basics.
Hopefully, Charlie will stick around to become the heroic story of someone springing back after reaching his bottom. That would make watching this far less creepy. Regardless, use this. Take a look in the mirror. Take a long look, because the tight rope of entitlement snaps for everyone. How far you fall is determined by how high you’re willing to walk. Step off and stay grounded.
Thanks Laura,
The voicing of your opinion, with regards to the current state of our society, was not only spot-on, but, has been long over due. The excuses, entitlements, and delusions that people not only convince themselves of, but more incredibly, try to pass on as legitimate and viable substitutes for their own lack of accountablity, has gotten far too out of control.
As with Charlie Sheen, the Jersey shore, You’re Cut Off (your show), Real Housewives, etc.(ad nauseam) this sad state of our youth and society is on display on a daily basis, and seems to be the goal for many disillusioned to mimic.
It seems as if now,the more desirable life path for many in our society is obtaining Reality TV fame and celebrity. Instead of aspiring to the dedicated work, studies, morals and ethics, which were once taught, the alternative goal and dream seems now to be getting some validation to a life not-well spent.
My only hope is that these people, who now seem to be everywhere, are really in the minority. Sensationaling these people ande their behaviors really should stop. Somehow, I don’t trust the audience to to decipher what I feel )or hope) is the real message offered; “Don’t let this happen to you”
While I know that for you, working with some of these people and their beliefs must have been a real challenge, keep up the good work. Hopefully, more people will come around and put and end to the shows, behaviors and beliefs which have been polluting our society for far too long.
Thanks again, and I look forward to more of your postings and blogs.
Michael
convicting, laura. thank you!
Wow, once again, I can’t agree with you more. When this was really flourishing a couple of months ago, I was about to go through the roof if I heard one more person make light of a creepy, appalling, mortifying situation such as Charlie Sheen’s. It’s as if society is entertained by the sickening behaviors that are induced from a life of excess. Do they not realize that this life of excess is not only fueled by excess wealth and fame, but also blatant drug use in the presence of toddlers? Not to mention the “goddesses” he has living with him in front of those two little boys; great way to raise gentlemen who will grow up to respect women, Charlie. Maybe they’ll learn to put a bullet through their fiancee’s arm on Christmas Day, too.
Allowing Sheen to take over the news headlines is the most erroneous move the news media can make at a time when we are dealing with a society whose current political system, economic imbalances, and human rights inequalities are dividing us more than ever. The sense of entitlement you speak to is so spot on because it’s a classic example of the evolution of a society that yes, works very hard for often not enough, but plays harder to the point that we have become developmentally stunted. How can we advocate for “change” and seek the progression America so desperately needs as the world is rapidly changing when we’re allowing ourselves to be filled with the nonsense that Sheen purports? If all we do after the 9-5 is find a way to “relax” that also kills brain cells because we feel that entitlement, how are we supposed to make that quantum shift we so desperately need, a shift that could improve the quality of life worldwide?
There are 5 year-old prostitutes in Cambodia. 7 year-old child soldiers in SW Africa. Senior citizens abuse rates in nursing homes have increased with the turbulent economic crisis, and heart disease continues to cost the economy billions of dollars and is directly linked to sociodemographic characteristics of poverty, unemployment, and lack of education. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_10/sr10_249.pdf
But hey, America just wants to see the guy who claims he “Wins!” as he furthers the sickening example that ruins us at the core.
